Bette Midler gets catty in new movie
By Brenda Turner
When Bette Midler met three of her four-footed co-stars at a photo shoot with USA WEEKEND Magazine, she was impressed.
“They were really, really funny and very good tempered and good actors, too!” says Midler, who voices the lead character in the new movie “Cat & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore.”
The actual Kitty Galore, alas, is not so nice.
“Poor thing,” Midler says, “she fell into a vat of Nair, or some kind of a hair-removal goo, and she lost all her hair, and then she sort of went rogue. Her owners rejected her because she had lost all her hair. They didn’t want her to be their pet anymore, so she’s become very bitter and angry. It’s quite psychological. It’s so deep!”
That feline angst let Midler go a bit rogue, too: “It was great fun because I got to really chew up the scenery, vocally.”
This is the second time Midler has played a pet; she voiced a poodle in Disney’s 1988 animated movie “Oliver & Company.” Comparing the two characters, the Divine Miss M says, “They were actually the same character. They were both diva-esque. I don’t know why they keep casting me that way!”
Midler, who just finished a demanding two-year stretch of concerts in Las Vegas, plans to take it easy this summer. “I’m just, y’know, catching my breath. Trying to lose some weight, y’know, coloring my hair, doing my nails, doing some maintenance, some much-needed maintenance, on my body and my soul.” Purrfect.
