Bette Midler is contemplating removing a pair of bedazzled shoes from an upcoming auction because the prized keepsakes were a gift from Cher.
The singer/actress has given fans a chance to own her most iconic costumes by putting rare memorabilia from her private collection up for sale to benefit the New York Restoration Project.
However, while showcasing some of the pieces on the Today show on Tuesday, Midler reconsidered her decision to place a colorful pair of platforms under the hammer – because her 17-year-old daughter Sophie is devastated about having to part with the heels.
She said, “Cher gave me these shoes in the early ’70s when these kind of platform shoes were all the rage… You cannot walk or take a step in them. My daughter is so mad about them, when she heard I was going to sell them, she got, like, panic-stricken. So I may remove them.”
But Midler’s daughter isn’t the only one having a hard time watching the possessions go to auction – the keepsakes are bringing back a lot of fond memories for the singer/actress.
She adds, “It was terribly emotional. When I saw the catalogue, which is one of the most beautiful things ever, I burst into tears because I couldn’t believe it, it happened in a blink of an eye. It was so fantastic. The ride was such a wild ride. But it was 40 years… I can’t believe I’m doing it.”
The collection can be viewed at Julien’s Auctions in Beverly Hills, California until November 11.
17-year old daughter Sophie? According to my sources, Sophie was born 11/14/1986, which today makes her 24.
Yeah, they are way off!
I was about to say! She went from being a year and a half older then me to 6 years younger! Wow! Go her! :p
Could anyone PLEASE help me pass a note to Miss Midler that there seems to be some hurt feelings from a couple of the oldest living Harlettes that their dresses weren’t offered to them or to the estate of Sharon Redd? I’m trying every outlet possible. This auction is so exciting and so filled-to-overflowing with the most incredible items, but it would be a nice gesture, no?
i’ll try a couple of methods….who are they….can’t guarantee anything…..dtb@donbradshaw.com
