Bette Midler receives Harvard’s woman award
February 18, 1976
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) – Pop singer Bette Midler has received Harvard University’s “woman of the year” award from the school’s Hasty Pudding theatrical club.
The red-haired singer said Tuesday she accepted the award – the 26th in the 128-year history of the club – on behalf of all entertainers who perform before live audiences. She said, “I accept this gratefully and with no humility at all.”
At the urging of the crowd, she sang “one of my really nasty numbers,” a blues-style song about a dentist named Dr. Long John.
Midler’s award was a shiny gold bean pot with a handle. Her name was engraved on the side.
