There are chick flicks, and then there are chick flicks. Not all of them have to be sappy romances or centered around death and despair. Occasionally, we get a movie where the ladies get their sweet revenge and nobody gets hurt – at least not physically.
Here’s our list of Top 5 chick flicks where revenge is a dish best served cold.
1. “Whipped” (2000)
This often overlooked movie starring Amanda Peet is completely under appreciated. Peet’s character, Mia, plays three egotistical halfwits who meet every Sunday for breakfast to discuss their conquests. Several of the scenes are fantastically funny. A great girls’ night movie.
2. “French Kiss” (1995)
Meg Ryan stars in this movie about a woman who gets dumped after her fiance meets a “god-dess” in France. She follows him there and enlists the help of Kevin Kline to win him back. Their plan works, but she ends up dumping him.
Ultimately, she ends up with Kline (and is better off for it), and her ex ends up with some high-maintenance arm candy. It’s actually an adorable film with some very funny lines.
3. “My Super Ex-Girlfriend” (2006)
Uma Thurman stars as the ultimate jealous girlfriend. Unfortunately, her boyfriend (played by Luke Wilson) finds out too late that she’s a super hero and what it’s like to be with her. Some very funny moments with some great special effects. The shark scene is hysterical.
Wilson costarred with Drew Barrymore in “Home Fries” where he played the role of a young man whose mother is obsessed with getting revenge on her cheating husband. Catherine O’Hara is perfect as his controlling mother.
4. “Addicted to Love” (1997)
Meg Ryan, Matthew Broderick and Kelly Preston star in this rom com about a guy who’s desperately trying to get his girlfriend back and the woman he meets and eventually enlists to help him do it. Sound familiar? Meg Ryan’s great in this one as well.
5. “The First Wives Club” (1996)
The quintessential movie among chick flicks where the ladies turn the tables. Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn and Diane Keaton star. Midler had some prior practice when she got revenge on Danny DeVito back in 1986’s “Ruthless People,” another very funny movie.
Addicted to Love ? I love this film. It’s pure screwball comedy, a wonderful mix of light and dark. The Rear Window of romantic comedy. Voyeuristic? Yes. Obsessive? Yes. Funny? Hell yes!
