Bette’s role as a ruthless executive in 1988’s Big Business makes Meryl Streep’s character in The Devil Wears Prada look like a harmless lamb. The way she exits the elevator in her wide-brimmed hat and just starts slinging zingers is classic Bette.
Miss M is known for her physical comedy, and her hilarious vamping skills are on full display as she checks herself out in the mirror during this scene from 1986’s Ruthless People. Don’t miss her sobbing the classic line “I’ve been kidnapped by K-Mart” at the end of the clip.
Singing and being funny are hard enough to do on their own, but doing both at once takes a special talent. Here’s a witchy Bette bringing down the house with her enchantingly hilarious rendition of “I Put a Spell on You” from 1993’s Hocus Pocus
One of Bette’s most infamous performance alter egos is Delores Delago, a mermaid cabaret singer who uses a wheelchair to get around. Check out Bette hamming it up as Delores during this campy 1983 performance of Donna Summer’s “I Will Survive”.
Bette is a clearly a comedic genius, but she also has a serious side. At the first 9/11 Memorial at Yankee Stadium in 2001 she knocked it out of the park with an uplifting performance of her classic ballad “Wind Beneath My Wings“. It’s probably safe to say there wasn’t a dry eye in the arena by the time she brought it home on the final chorus.
