This Sunday’s Golden Globes are sure to be full of memorable moments. Some are sure to be funny, heartwarming, or even jaw-dropping, but all will be absolutely iconic. Here are some of the most memorable moments from Golden Globes of years past.

1956

Jayne Mansfield returned to the Globes and proclaimed she’s “back in town.” She was estranged from her first husband Paul Mansfield and had just met her new love interest—Mickey Hargitay. After the ceremony, 20th Century Fox signed her for the most successful run of her career.

At the same ceremony, Grace Kelly received an award for World Film Favorite—Female. It was one of her last (possibly the very last) public appearance in Hollywood before she married Prince Rainier of Monaco and retired from acting at age 26.

1958

The Rat Pack took over the broadcast. Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis, Jr. got bored with the show and once they had a couple drinks in them, they jumped onto the stage with cigarettes and cocktail glasses and took over hosting the show. The crowd ended up being into it and many have said it set the precedent for the type of show we watch today.

1962

When Marilyn Monroe received a Golden Globe during the awards ceremony from Rock Hudson, she never knew it would become one of the most iconic award show photographs of all time.

1980

Bette Midler accepted her award for New Star of the Year for The Rose. Her speech was full of some seriously funny sexual innuendo which you can catch here.

1983

Laurence Olivier’s speech accepting the Cecil B. DeMille Award ends up getting a little too animated. Flailing his arm, the actor ended up accidentally knocked his statue to the floor where the award broke in half. Whoops!

1998

Christine Lahti’s name is called as the winner of best actress in a TV drama for Chicago Hope. It turns out, Lahti was in the bathroom and comedian Robin Williams entertained the audience until Lahti returned.

1999

After winning Best Actress in a Miniseries or TV Movie for Gia, Angelina Jolie famously jumped into the Aqua Star Pool at the Beverly Hilton.

2001

Renée Zellweger nearly missed her moment to accept her 2001 Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for Nurse Betty. When she reached the stage, only after Hugh Grant had begun accepting the award on her behalf, she confessed she had been in the bathroom wiping lipstick off her teeth when the honor was announced.

2013

Jodie Foster surprised everyone at the Golden Globes when she came out during an acceptance speech for her Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement award.

2014

Emma Thompson presented an award sans shoes, making us all believe we are all Emma Thompson.

2018

Seth Meyers has the daunting task of hosting the Golden Globes in a post-Harvey Weinstein world.
