Maynard and Midler: Aussie Talk

Newcastle ABC
Maynard’s Music Malaise – Bette Midler
Wednesday, 13 April 2005
Presenter: Maynard

Bette Midler has come a long way from her first job at a pineapple cannery.

From Bathouse to Opera house

Bette was born in Honolulu in 1945 and was named after the legendary Bette Davis so of course she had to have a career in show business.

Her range of songs is just gob smacking, consider this, the same woman who sang the moving, haunting ballad, “Wind Beneath My Wings” also gave us the burlesque of “Otto Titsling”

Bette gave us the almost biblical “From A Distance” and the bondage inspired “My Knight In Black Leather”. That’s variety for ya.

She currently owns a poodle after the sad passing of her Jack Russell terrier “Queen Puddles”.

That’s her (right) at the end of “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” in her “Diva Las Vegas” show. She is about to die of heat stress after performing the number in that latex Mermaid costume. You can see the effect all that effort has had on the other performers.

What more do you need to know about her? It’s all in the listening below.

She’s fabulous and touring Australia this month.
