Helen Hunt returns to movies in ‘Then She Found Me’

Whatever happened to Helen Hunt? It’s been slim pickings for fans of the Oscar-winning star of “As Good As it Gets” and the TV series “Mad About You.”

Hunt returns in April with a triple-threat turn, starring, directing an co-adapting the Elinor Lipman novel, “Then She Found Me.” Hunt’s directing debut also marks the return of another performer whose screen career has suffered a bit of drought, Bette Midler (her last picture was the 2004 remake of “The Stepford Wives”).

Hunt stars as a schoolteacher forging a new life after separating from her husband (Matthew Broderick) and losing her adoptive mother. Midler plays her birth mother, a talk show host who contacts her out of the blue.

This week, Midler opens a two-year nightclub stint in Las Vegas at at Casesar’s Palace. Midler has also wrapped a remake of the Claire Boothe Luce comedy, “The Women,” co-starring Annette Bening, Candice Bergen and Jada Pinkett Smith.

“Then She Found Me” recently won the Audience Award at the 2008 Palm Beach International Film Festival. It is set for an April 25 release.
