BETTE MIDLER will return to Broadway to join the celebrities appearing in “Short Talks on the Universe,” MIKE NICHOLS’S grouping of six short plays that is destined to have a short run, only two nights at the Eugene O’Neill Theater on West 49th Street — Nov. 17 and 18. Appearing in the play’s other acts will be such performers as ELLEN BARKIN, MATTHEW BRODERICK, ANGELA LANSBURY and EMMA THOMPSON. Ms. Midler has been assigned a solo role, “I Hate My Purse,” a monologue by NORA EPHRON. Ms. Ephron adapted it from a magazine article while putting the finishing touches on “Imaginary Friends,” the full-length musical that begins previews the following week.
