Aiding the AIDS fight

Elton John’s star-packed fund-raiser last week for his AIDS foundation took in a whopping $2.8 million! The big moments at Cipriani on Wall Street came when Donatella Versace auctioned off her villa in Lake Como – a week’s vacation for some lucky person. It was Bette Midler who shelled out $140,000 for a seven-day sojourn at Versace’s digs. Never to be outdone, Elton John jumped up and offered a similar deal for either his palazzo in Venice or his villa in Nice. Bidding became so intense that John finally decided to put both places up for temporary residence. Venice went for $150,000, Nice for $100,000.
