The Divine Miss M, Bette Midler spoke to Extra in Las Vegas about young Hollywood today, and how she avoided the pitfalls of early fame, her new Vegas show and having plastic surgery.
When asked what words of advice she has for Britney Spears, Midler responded, “I would try to make her comfortable being herself and being alone without a lot of attention”¦.I would try to get her to calm down and know there’s a world besides this show business world”¦ There’s so much more than she’s letting herself experience.”
Midler partially blames the parents of these young stars for their troubled lives saying, “A lot of these kids [young celebrities] come from parents who are ill to begin with and its no big deal for them to go down on that path”¦In my day, there was a lot more shame. Shame has gone out the window and that’s a damn shame.
I really miss shame because shame kept people in line.”
Even though she experienced young fame herself, Midler was able to avoid the fallen path saying, “The booze and drugs. That’s a lot of fun [but] the next day you feel like a dog. I used to feel so lousy that I couldn’t work”¦so I never wanted to be so sick that I couldn’t work”¦I escaped because I didn’t have an addictive personality.”
Midler now joins other legendary acts such as Cher and Elton John on the Vegas strip to perform and she promises not to disappoint.
“It’s the sexiest show I’ve ever done and I am really proud of that,” she says. Speaking of sexy, Midler has become an ageless beauty and admits to having “fabulous legs.” When asked if she would consider having plastic surgery, she responded, “Doesn’t everybody consider it?…When it really starts to cave in, I probably will start to give it a real good think.”
Until she goes under the knife, Midler reveals to “Extra” her beauty secrets. “I am really good about my regime. I am really disciplined. I don’t keep strange hours and I don’t drink a lot and I don’t smoke.”
