Way back on September 20, 1996, the world was introduced to the First Wives Club; three divorced women, reunited after the death of a mutual friend, who join together to seek revenge against the ex-husbands.
The First Wives Club starred Goldie Hawn, Bette Midler and Diane Keaton as well as Maggie Smith, Victor Garber, Sarah Jessica Parker, Dan Hedaya, Stockard Channing, Stephen Collins and many more!
As it’s been 20 years since these three powerhouse women graced our screens together; let’s have a look at what they have done since.
GOLDIE HAWN
Goldie Hawn is part of one of Hollywood’s power families, having been in a relationship with Kurt Russell (The Hateful Eight and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2) since 1983. Hawn also two famous children; Kate Hudson (Almost Famous) and Oliver Hudson (Rules of Engagement), from a previous relationship.
Hawn has been quiet since her role as Elise Elliot, starring in only five roles since: Everyone Says I Love You, The Out-of-Towners, Town & Country, The Banger Sisters and a couple of episodes of Phineas and Ferb.
In 2017, Goldie Hawn will return to acting for her first role in 15 years inMother/Daughter starring alongside Amy Schumer and Christopher Meloni.
FIRST WIFE FACT: Goldie Hawn nearly didn’t play Elise Elliot –American Horror Story star, Jessica Lange, was originally considered for the role.
BETTE MIDLER
A singer/songwriter, actress, film producer and a comedian, Bette Midler was born in Hawaii on December 1, 1945.
This multi-award winner has a theater career spanning 4 decades, has released 14 studio albums, and has been starring in films since The Rosein 1979 – and shows no signs of stopping anytime soon!
Since The First Wives Club, Midler has gone on to star in That Old Feeling, played herself in an episode of The Nanny, Drowning Mona, Isn’t She Great, What Women Want, Bette, The Stepford Wives, The Women, Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore and Parental Guidance.
2013 saw The Divine Miss M return to Broadway for the first time in 30 years in I’ll Eat You Last: A Chat with Sue Mengers, and will return in 2017 for the Broadway revival of Hello Dolly.
FIRST WIFE FACT: The First Wives Club wasn’t the first time Bette Midler worked with Sarah Jessica Parker. They starred together in Hocus Pocus three years earlier.
DIANE KEATON
Diane Keaton got her big break as part of the original cast of the Broadway musical Hair. In 1970, Woody Allen cast her in the stage production of Play It Again, Sam – Allen later cast her in the live action adaption, which marked the first of eight films that the pair would make over the next 20 years!
After The First Wives Clubs, Keaton went on to star in Marvin’s Room, The Other Sister, Hanging Up, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Town & Country, Something’s Gotta Give, The Family Stone, Mad Money, Morning Glory, The Big Wedding, 5 Flights Up, Love the Coopers and most recently,Finding Dory.
Diane Keaton is also an avid photographer; one her snaps appeared on the cover of Time magazine in 1977. She has even published multiple collections of her own photographs.
FIRST WIFE FACT: They may have played a divorced couple in this film, but 11 years later Diane Keaton and Stephen Collins reunited to play a couple getting married in Because I Said So.
FANS REJOICE! The First Wives Club Will Be Reuniting!
It might not be the sequel that the three actresses wanted to make, but all three will be reuniting for the Netflix comedy, Divanation.
