In a recent interview, Bette Midler said “Bruce Springsteen doesn’t know; Tom Waits knows.”
Bette Midler is right. Where Springsteen writes about adolescent agony and the anxiety of the unknown, Waits’ tunes have the world-weary, tromped-upon feeling of a man who has spent innumerable early hours hovering over a cup of coffee in a greasy spoon.
