On Twitter, Bette Midler had this to say @BetteMidler about this year’s Tony nominations. Midler is a producer of PRISCILLA, QUEEN OF THE DESERT, which received two Tony nominations – for Tony Sheldon as Best Leading Actor in a Musical and for Best Costume Design of a Musical for Tim Chappel & Lizzy Gardiner.
BetteMidler It’s COMMERCIAL THEATER, PEOPLE! These shows are the Gift Horses of Broadway!!
BetteMidler Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, two Tony noms…nearly shut out! But company is great, Daniel Radcliffe didn’t get a nod; that’s just RUDE!
hmm, I’m not quite sure how to understand Bette’s comment about the commercial aspect: Does she mean that they should give the Tony to the show that makes the most money? Doesn’t she have quite an opposite opinion when it comes to movies (and records)? And isn’t it great that artistry is recognized even if it’s not happening in a “gift horse”, for instance for performances like hers in both “The Rose” and “For the Boys”, or nods for “The Peggy Lee Songbook” or “Cool Yule”? And what about a well deserved round of applause for Marc Shaiman and his basket full of nominations for “Catch Me” instead of the whining???
