NEW YORK (UPI) – Sometimes singers hit stardom overnight while others, like Helen Reddy, have to work hard for it.
More often than not. the overnight sensations find they can’t keep repeating hits and they soon are forgotten. Those who won’t give up and
eventually make it generally stay around a long time.
Miss Reddv, who left her native Australia for the United States, faced one disappointment after another over a period of years before her first successful single led to an album.
Her third album. “ I Am a Woman” (Capitol ST-11068), should establish her as a doptmdable artist and a good investment for her recording
company.
“I Am Woman.” the title song of the album, has been a best seller on the singles list for several weeks and is the standout song in this selection but others are good, notably Don McLean’s “ And I Love You So.” Paul Williams’ “What Would They Say” and leon Russell’s “This Masquerade.”
Bette Midler is another young woman who seems to have a , bright future as a songstress.
She has a silky, sexy voice that is just right for such songs as “Do You Want to Dance?” and Friends,” two of the numbers ow “The Divine Miss M” (Atlantic SD 7238a).
Although Miss Midler definitely Is a newcomer, she should evoke beautiful, nostalgic images with her version of “ Am I Blue,” which was written at least 40 years ago.
Two all-star musicians–Dirk Hyman on piano and Milt Hinton on bass–back up Bette on “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.”
Like Miss Reddy, Bette includes a Leon Russel number, “Superstar,” in this grouping of songs.
