Helen Hunt will be honored as Breakthrough Director of the Year at ShoWest, which runs March 10-13 at the Bally’s and Paris hotels in Las Vegas.
The Emmy and Oscar-winning actress is making her feature directorial debut with “Then She Found Me,” in which she also stars. In the adaptation of Elinor Lipman’s novel of the same name, Hunt plays a schoolteacher, separated from her husband (Matthew Broderick), dealing with her adoptive mother (Bette Midler), who falls in love with the parent (Colin Firth) of one of her students. ThinkFilm is releasing the movie on April 25.
“With such diverse work in theater, television and feature film, Helen Hunt’s work in front of the camera is widely known and has garnered her critical acclaim worldwide,” ShoWest co-managing director Mitch Neuhauser said. “We are thrilled that she has now decided to take her talents behind the lens, making her directorial debut with ‘Then She Found Me,’ which will be screening at our Independent Showcase.”
The award will be presented to Hunt at the convention’s March 11 Opening Day Luncheon, which will focus on the importance of specialty and independent films and distribution companies in today’s marketplace.
ShoWest is produced by the Film Group at Nielsen Business Media, which includes The Hollywood Reporter.
