Council Speaker Miller has raised $1 million for “undeclared” race

NEW YORK (AP) _ Since July 1, City Council Speaker Gifford Miller has received 1,474 contributions and raised more than $1 million for an “undeclared” race.
Miller’s contributions have come from law firms, lobbyists, real estate tycoons and singer Bette Midler, among others, Newsday reported in Sunday’s editions, citing records from the city Campaign Finance Board.
Gifford has not yet announced whether he intends to run for mayor in 2005. His “undeclared” status means the campaign contributions may be used toward the race of his choice.
“People are getting to know him better, and he’s raising his profile,” said Lisa Esler, executive director of Miller’s fund-raising effort. “People like what he’s doing and they are being supportive.”
Miller has also received donations from officials and firms involved in redeveloping the World Trade Center site. John Whitehead, the chairman of the Lower Manhattan Development Corp., and architects from Beyer Blinder Belle and Skidmore Owings & Merrill are among his contributors.
