Bette Midler and Billy Crystal fans rejoice. Though Midler’s last major role was in 2008’s ‘The Women’ (she’s coming off her highly successful Las Vegas revue) and Crystal’s last was 2002’s ‘Analyze That‘ (he’s segued to voice-overs, Broadway and books, and has had cameos in ‘The Tooth Fairy’ and the upcoming ‘The Muppets’), the pair may be teaming big-time on the family comedy ‘Us & Them,’ according to Variety.

Joining them in the 20th Century Fox and Walden Media production will be ‘Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark’ star Bailee Madison.

Andy Fickman (‘You Again’) will direct from a script by long-time Crystal collaborators Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel (‘City Slickers). Lisa Addario and Joe Syracuse wrote the original draft, while Crystal and Samantha Sprecher came up with the story.

In the film, Crystal stars as Artie Decker, a Fresno AAA baseball broadcaster who, along with his wife Diane (Midler), has to move in with and take care of his three grandchildren. The conflict in the story centers on 21st century parenting methods vs. the old school of upbringing. Madison will play one of the kids.

Production on the film will begin in late September in Atlanta.

Crystal we know can play old — see ‘The Princess Bride’ — but it will be interesting to see Midler’s (wasn’t it only yesterday that she was singing in the N.Y. baths with Barry Manilow?) take on being a senior citizen. What do you think?

  1. This is a weird article. Just because she is playing a grandmother role doesn’t mean she has to play old. There are young grandmothers aged as young as 40 sometimes younger. I guess it’s going to depend how old the oldest grandchild is going to be. I hope they don’t make her appear older in the movie.

    1. I think they were just being nice towards Bette cause she looks good (she looks GOOD!!!) but your point is right on the money now that we are in the Age of the Baby MaMas! I’m positive they’ll leave her just the way she looks now.
