Award-winning actress Bette Midler spoke out Wednesday in support of Oklahoma teachers in the wake of a looming walkout.

“Is this America? Teachers in Oklahoma make ends meet by SELLING THEIR BLOOD PLASMA! THEY ARE THE VICTIMS OF UNBELIEVABLE CUTBACKS! #STRIKE,” Midler, known for her character in movie “Hocus Pocus,” tweeted Wednesday on her official account.

KOCO 5 spoke to a Newcastle teacher back in May, 2017, who said that he gives plasma to supplement his income. Jay Thomas said that he gives blood every week just to pay the bills.

The plasma helps give his family a little extra each week. What they get isn’t much, but they say any little bit helps his family of four.

The Oklahoma Education Association has called on teachers across the state to walk out on April 2, if lawmakers don’t come up with a plan to fund teacher pay raised and education needs.
